What the 50/10 method is
The classic Pomodoro runs 25 minutes of focus followed by 5 minutes of break. The 50/10 variant doubles the block: 50 minutes deep, 10 minutes off. It’s the favorite of programmers, grad students, and anyone doing work that takes a long time to load into working memory — 25 minutes can end just as the code finally makes sense.
50/10 fits when:
- Your task has a long warm-up (big codebases, dense papers, long-form writing)
- You find 25-minute sessions interruptive — you’re just getting going when the bell rings
- You can protect a full hour; 50/10 uses blocks of exactly one hour including the break
Stick with 25/5 when: you’re starting a new habit, the work is unpleasant (shorter commitments are easier to begin), or your environment is interrupt-prone.
Why this timer’s accuracy matters at 50 minutes
Most web timers are a setInterval loop. Browser tab throttling — Chrome Energy Saver, Safari App Nap — can slow those ticks to one per minute or worse when the tab goes background. Over a 50-minute session, a naive timer can drift by minutes.
This timer runs its clock in a dedicated Web Worker on a separate OS thread, measuring elapsed time with the monotonic performance.now() clock instead of counting ticks. Background the tab, lock your screen, come back in an hour — the countdown is exactly where wall-clock time says it should be.
How to use this page
- Timer pre-set to 50 minutes — the mode tabs above let you switch to 25/5, long breaks, or Animedoro (50/20) anytime
- Brown Noise (50%) + Rain (35%) — a neutral deep-work bed for long stretches; adjust freely
- Workday ETA — add tasks with pomodoro estimates in the task panel, and the timer shows the exact clock time you’ll finish everything

FAQ
Is 50/10 or 25/5 better?
Neither is universally better — they suit different work. 25/5 gives more frequent recovery and lower commitment friction; 50/10 rewards work that rewards immersion. Try each for a week and watch your session history here: the stats modal tracks completed pomodoros per day, so you’ll see which schedule you actually keep.
Does the long-break rule still apply with 50/10?
Yes. Take a longer 20–30 minute break every 2–3 blocks (every 4 hours of work). With 50-minute blocks, two blocks plus a long break makes a natural morning and afternoon.
Can I change the durations?
All of them — open Settings (gear icon) to set any focus, short break, long break, and long-break interval you want. Custom intervals like 52/17 or 90/20 work identically.
