Why rain helps you study
Gentle rain is the classic study sound for a reason. The patter is made of thousands of tiny, random, mid-frequency impacts — acoustically close to pink noise, whose energy falls 3 dB per octave. Random broadband sound is excellent at covering up distracting noises (a door, a voice, a chair scraping) without itself demanding attention.
Rain also carries a learned safety signal: for most of us it means we’re inside, warm, and off the hook. That association lowers background tension, which is exactly the state you want before a long study block.
The loop-seam problem, solved
Rain is the worst possible sound to loop. Every drop is a distinct event, so when a recorded loop restarts, the pattern resets in a way your brain can detect — even if you can’t consciously name it. Listeners describe it as a small “click” in the back of the mind that keeps pulling them out of the material.
Here, rain is synthesized, not recorded: a filtered pink-noise bed plus Poisson-distributed raindrop impulses fired at random intervals. The drop you hear next has never existed before. There is no loop, no seam, and no file to download.
How to use this page
This page opens pre-configured for a study session:
- Gentle Rain (60%) — the patter bed
- Distant Thunder (20%) — a low rumble every 20–35s for depth, never jarring
- Brown Noise (20%) — a subtle low-end floor
- 25-minute Pomodoro timer — study in focused blocks, take a real break, return
Hit Space or the Start button. Type your study intention in the task box — the timer will show you exactly when you’ll finish your workday.
FAQ
Is rain noise good for ADHD focus?
Many ADHD students report that rain’s random mid-frequency texture occupies the “boredom channel” that would otherwise seek stimulation from a phone. Combined with the Pomodoro structure and a visible finish-time estimate (which reduces time-blindness stress), it’s one of the most commonly recommended free combinations.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once this page has loaded, the service worker caches everything — you can fly for ten hours or study in a basement and the rain, thunder, and timer keep going with no connection.
Can I change the mix?
Absolutely. Every channel card above is a real mixer channel — adjust volume, mute, or add a coffeehouse murmur, and your mix is remembered for next time.
